Chapter 1

You will need to write a short summary of what we have read in chapter 1, find 3 important quotes, and write about what you like AND what you do not like about the book so far.

19 comments:

  1. Summary:
Marcus Yallow gets called to the vice principals office. He thinks Marcus is "w1n5t0n" but he doesnt actually have proof of it. Marcus denies any relations with w1n5t0n. Fredrick Benson--vice principle--releases Marcus to go back to class. Marcus walks awkwardly to class so the gaits wont recognize him. When he gets back to class he opens up a chat room that is unseen by the school board on the laptops assigned to each student. His best friend Darryl is online. They chat about going to some sort of game, but Darryl is hesitant because he can get expelled from school for skipping again. Marcus talks Darryl into going when he mentions that Marsha is going to be there.
    Quotes:
    1. "If it isn't Double-you-one-enn-five-tee-zero-enn" This quote shows that Fredrick Benson is not aware that it actually spells Winston.
    2. "We have reliable intelligence indiction that you are w1n5t0n" Fredrick is just trying to make Marcus tell the truth.
    3. "The procedure for calling in the police is complicted. I'd hoped that we could settle this fairly and quickly, but since you insist-" He is reluctant to call the police because he has no evidence that Marcus is w1n5t0n.
My views on the book thus far:
The book is different from other books I have read. I like the fact that the diction is easy to understand. The author gets straight to the point with what he is trying to convey in the book. On the other hand, this book is more for computer nerds. People who understand how a computer works and can manipulate the divice with ease. All of the computer talk confuses me.

  2. The book starts off with the main character Marcus Yallow. He knows how to manage his schools systems for security and other devices. Marcus and his best friend leave the school to meet with other hackers when an earthquake occurs.
I like the book's playful manner, humor and transitions. I do not have any problems about the book, it could be a little more descriptive but otherwise it is enjoyable.
" No one at school ever called me w1n5t0n or even Winston. Not even my pals. It was Marcus or nothing."
"Any program whose name starts with $SYS$ is invisible to the operating system. It doesn’t show up on listings of the hard drive, nor in the process monitor."
". The school’s network logged every click in and out of the system, which was bad news if you were planning on surfing over to the Harajuku Fun Madness site for some extracurricular fun."
-These three quotes are important because they show Marcus's knowledge on hacking, and computers.

  4. Marcus Yallow is a student at Cesar Chavez High in San Francisco Sunny Mission distract. Marcus gets called to the vice principles office. Vice principle Fred Benson accuses Marcus of being w1n5t0n, one of the best hackers in the city. When Mr. Benson can not prove Marcus is w1n5t0n he is sent back to class. When Marcus get online he sees his friend Darryl is also online. He try's to convoke darryl of coming with him to some sort of ARPing game. Marcus finally convinces Darryl of going when he tells h that a girl named Marsha is going also.
    QUOTES 1-3
    1. "Sorry, nope, I said." I've never heard of this R2D2 character of yours.
Marcus is speaking to Mr. Benson after he accuses him of being w1n5t0n.
    2. We know that this w1n5t0n character is responsible for the theft of last year's standardized test.
Ms. Benson speaking to Marcus about the remarkable theft of the test for his school last year. Even though Marcus didn't do this he was flattered that someone thought this work was his.
    3. No one at school ever called me w1n5t0n or even Winston. Not even my pals. It was Marcus or nothing.
Even though people may know what Marcus' code name was they wouldn't say it outloud. No one would rat him out.

So far I really like this book. It's cool reading about all the computer things and learning how Marcus and his friends life's are in the future. I don't have any reason not to like this book.

  5. Chapter One is about Marcus Yallow, a senior at Cesar Chavez High School. He is into gaming, and computer systems. He is seen as a trouble-maker by Fredrick Benson, the vice-principal. However, he is smart enough to not get caught. He goes by the name w1n5t0n, when it comes to hacking, and system software. He also plays an Alternate Reality Game with his friends, called Harajuku Fun Madness. The book is set in the future. I do not have anything against this book so far, I like the way it is written, and the characters that are in it.
"I always say "sir" to authority figures when I'm messing with them. It's my own tell." This quote is important to show his stubbornness.
"I don't fold. I have a trick for staring down people like Benson." This quote is important to show that he isn't easily scared.
"The Man was always coming down on me..." This quote is important to foreshadow the rest of the story.

  6. Summary:
Marcus Yallow aka "W1n5t0n", get called down to the office, because they think he is associated with the a criminal crime of conspriacy of hacking in to the school security system. The priciple doesnt have a proof of the crime so he sends him on his way. His friend Darryl, tells him about the new clue on Harajuku Fun and is trying to convince Marcus to skip school.
So far I like the book, in a way it realates to reality, and have no problem with it.
    Qoutes:
“When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout.”
“Never underestimate the determination of a kid who is time-rich and cash-poor.”
“I can't go underground for a year, ten years, my whole life, waiting for freedom to be handed to me. Freedom is something you have to take for yourself.”

  7. marcus gets called to the office and on the way there he gets a text about his favoirite game called harajuku fun madness when he gets back from the office he gets his friend darryl to ditch school and when they are about to leve darryl remembers that he has a libaray book in his back pack that has a arphid in the binding
    1. ...harajuku fun madness happens to be the best game ever. this is important because that is the whole reason that they leve school in the frist place.
    2. everyone of (the library books) has an arphid- rodio frequency ID tag- glued into its binding
    3. the SchoolBooks were the snitchiest technalogy of them all logging every keystroke watching all the net work traffic fevsuspicious keywords counting every click keeping track of every fleeting thought you put out over the net
these last 2 are importent because their show how paraonid the schools are

  8. Marcus is the main character. He goes to Chavez High School, he is an electronic hacker. His school is extremely rich and he has nerdy friends. "You have reliable intelligence? I'd like to see it." He is showing the principal that he supposivly does not know what is going on. "I will just as soon as you explain what this is, sir." He is once again showing the principal that he has supposivly limited knowledge on what is going on. "If there's evidence, sir, I think you should call the police and turn it over to them. It sounds like this is a very serious matter, and I wouldn't want to stand in the way of a proper investigation by the duty constituted authorities." He is testing the principal to do something that he knows is right, but Marcus knows that the principal will not do such a thing. I like this book because it is interesting and suspenseful. It makes me want to continue the book and figure out what happens next.

  9. Marcus yallow and his three friends Darryl, Van Pak, and Jolu escape school to go on adventure for the game Harajuku madness. They are all mischevious teenage hackers in Sanfrancisco wh work their way through the systems.

"I never heard of this R2D2 character of yours."
Marcus is trying to give off W1n5t0n as a fictional entity.

"We know that this w1n5t0n character is reponsible for the theft of last year's standardized tests."
Benson is trying to scare Marcus and get him to own up and take responsibilty.

"If there's evidence, sir, I think you should call the police and turn it over to them. It sounds like this is a very serious matter, and I wouldn't want to stand in the way of a proper investigation by the duly constituted authorities."
Marcus is trying to give off that it is not him and that if it was he would be scared even though he is pulling a frint anyway.

The book is not of my preference but is interesting compared to the other pieces of lit. that we have read previously. I lke that is at least close to our present day lives and not from the 1900's. I do not like their particular story it is interesting but it's not my cup of tea about computer hacking im not that into action. But i am sure with time the book will succeed in grasping my attention when it gets more intense maybe.

  10. Yallow and his 3 friends snuck out of school for a video game could harajuku and when they at the building an earth cuake a cuard, and they got stuck.
I like this book because that is interesting, and teaches you what not to do stupid things.
I do not like this book because I do not see in it of any meaning, but it teaches you something, but it is very dull moments.

  11. So basically the book is about Marcus Yallow you knows how to hack computers and fool cameras and stuff like that. Marcus and some of his friends decide to leave school early to play a game called Harajuku, when their city is attacked by terrorists.
Three important quotes in the book are:
-"Report to the amin office immediatel."
    -"If it isnt Double-you-one-enn-five-tee-zero-enn"
-"We have reliable evidence that you are winston."
These quotes are important because it shows that Mr. Benson suspects Marcus as a hacker and he doesnt like him at all.
so far I like the book and its very interesting and keeps me entertain.

  12. Marcuz Yallow is the main chacacter in this book.He is a major hacker and his hackers' name is W1n5t0n. He knows how his in's and out's through security codes and camaras!
"We have relaible intelligence indicating that you are w1n5t0n"
"You have 'reliable intelligence'?I'd like to see it."
    If it isn't Double-you-one-enn-five-tee-zero-enn"
    - this shows that he is smarter than he prinipal and wants him to prove that he is doing it!
I like the suspense of the book, and the trilling part of it. It makes me want to keep reading it. There is nothing that I dislike the book!

  13. Marcus Yallow knows how to hack his schools security system. Marcus goes by W1n5ton on a chat he made, and he gets sent to the principle all the time for it. Marcus and his friend Darryl decide to leave school to go to a Harajuku Fun Madness game, but first they have to destroy a chip implanted in a school library book, and get past the gait-recongnition cameras.

I like this book because it is written from the perspective of a student.
There is nothing that i dont really like so far about this book.

"The problem, Mr.Yallow, is that you've been engaged in criminal conspiracy to subvert this school's security system, and you have supplied security countermeasures to your fellow students."

"The SchoolBooks were the snitchiest of them all, logging every keystroke, watching all the network traffic for suspicious keywords, counting every click, keeping track of every fleeting thought you put out over the net."

"Like i said, they'd started out as face-recognition cameras, but those had been ruled unconstitutional."

-These quotes are im portant because it shows of the school is so stressed over security and how Marcus can get around them.

  14. i had no way to get to a computer til today..i had family issues and stayed in norman all weekend.
A guy named Marcus Yallow goes to Cesar Chavez High School in San Francisco. His hacker name is W1n5t0n. His principal, Fred Benson, calls him to the office and talking to him about the recent school hackings and he is blaming him. He lets him leave his office and Marcus decides to skip with his friend Darryl and play Harajuku Fun Madness. Setting is "now" because they have laptops and cameras.
-"I go through school firewalls like a wet kleenex" is implying he is a good hacker and has been doing it for a while.
-"We have a reliable intelligence indicating you are w1n5t0n" is implying the school already has an idea that he hacks and messes things up for their network.
-"I need you D. You're the best i've got. I swear i'll get us in and out withone anyone knowing it. Yo know i can do that right?" is saying he is really smart, convincing, and shows he has done that before. All the quotes are showing what kind of person he is.
I like that we are reading a book in our time and not in 1700's so it's not hard to read and we understand it more. I dislike all the computer and gaming because i'm not good with names and i get confused?

"i loved them for their sheer idoicy"-he knows they can be be fooled easily"
"I go through school firewalls like a wet kleenex"-say that its easy for him and hes a good hacker
i like reading this book because its not boring and it takes place in our time not in the 18th century and we dont have to read about a lame A bc someone had an affair.

  16. In chapter 1, Marcus is sent to the principals office for supposedly hacking onto the internet during class. He is later sent back to class after talking his way out of it.
    1. "Marcus Yallow, over the pa this morning." this is who the main character is and it shows he went to the office.
    2. "if it isn't double-you-one- enn-five-tee-zero-enn!" The principal calling Marcus by his internet name.
    3. "I go through school firewalls like a wet kleenex" this is how easy it is for marcus to hack on the computer.
I like how smart Marcus is and his sense of humor. I don't like how strict the school is.

  17. Vincent Baza aka DADDYJanuary 17, 2012 at 8:53 PM

Marcus reveals that he is basically a genuus ad that he can out smart the whole school security system. He the game Harajuku Fun Madness and so does his friends. Him and is friends skip school and end up being at the site of a huge explosion.

"Social security number 545-03-2345, date of birth August 15, 1962, mothers maden name Di Bona, home town Potaluma." Because it show how much he can find out by his hacking.

"Any program whose name starts with $sys$ is ivisible to the operating system." This quote shows how much he knows about computers.

"The court would not let the school track us with arphids, but they could track library books." This tell how much he knows about his rights.

I like that the book is actually not about death and weird people like all the other books we read.

I don't really have anything that i don't like about the book. It is a good book so far for me.

  18. Marcus shows how smart he is by making his way around his schools security systems. Marcus and his friends decided to skip school and get to somewhere where they can play their favorite game, Harajuku Fun Madness. On their adventure of skipping school they get caught in a disaster.

-"I'll call on you once the police are ready to speak with you."
It shows how serious Marcus' school is about him hacking.

    -"If it isnt Double-you-one-enn-five-tee-zero-enn."
His principal doesnt realize that is spells W1n5t0n.

-"Marcus I hope you know how serious this is."
His school is trying to enforce the seriousness of his hacking.

I like the book so far, because Marcus tries to outsmart his principal and its security system. Its not as boring as all the other books we have read.

  19. What has happened so far is marcus is sent to the principals office. Because benson thinks he has somthing to do with winston. He cant actually prove it he goes back to class after talking his wat out of it and then talks his freind daryl to skip school with him.
1 Any program that starts whose name starts with $sys$is invisible to the system.
2 The answer is somthing ingenious called tor the onion router
